A Pharmacogenetics Use Case 
Jim wants to study the incidence and cause of side effects from an in-progress pharmaceutical company drug study. He opens a connection to a central electronic medical records data base by selecting the adverse reactions data source. A query is made against the data source that selects the drug that he wants to investigate. The server makes the appropriate connection to the database with a pre-configured query, appropriately parameterized. A table is displayed that contains all adverse reactions for the given drug.

Jim notices that there are a large number of incidents of a particular rash and suspects that a specific subgroup of patients is experiencing this side effect. Using Visual Data Explorer, he sorts the diagnoses and selects only those rows that have the side effect under investigation and exports this collection to a new “query result” for further analysis. This new query result is again displayed in a tabular view. He creates a rule that searches for patients that are also taking another class of drugs, called statins and finds that a large number of those with the side effect are also taking statins. Using the Visual Data Explorer screeners, he configures a threshold so that only those taking statins are displayed in the tabular view.

He wants to see if there is any correlation among those taking different kinds of statins and gender, body mass index, cholesterol level or age. Jim observes that a large number of patients over age 60 and taking a particular statin are affected. He exports the data and visualizations into a document for circulation to highlight the problem. He also publishes the data, visualizations and rules to an internal web portal so that others may interactively view the charts and change rule parameters to gain further insight into the process.
