JV PUB JV-Pub™ is a Java™ class library that, when combined with VantagePoint™, enables efficient and flexible server-side generation of charts in a number of formats including GIF, WMF, PDF and WBMP. In addition, when deployed on a Unix (or Linux) server, it eliminates dependence upon an X Windows server.
GIF GIF image generation is supported in JVPub through two independent, yet compatible, encoding mechanisms. The first, LZW, is a patented process that requires a license from Unisys to deploy on your server. The second, RLE, is not covered by this patent and frees you to deploy your application without requiring a separately negotiated agreement with Unisys. GIF images are dithered with the Floyd-Steinberg error diffusion algorithm for optimal image appearance.
Windows Metafile (WMF) Widows Metafile (WMF) is a common image support on the Windows platform for importing vector-based images (such as clipart). JVPub makes it simple to export VantagePoint™ charts as WMF files for easy incorporation into Microsoft Office documents and most other Windows applications. Charts may also be imported into graphics software such as Corel Draw or Adobe Illustrator for further editing and refinement.
PDF Portable Document Format (PDF) is the de facto standard for electronic document publication and distribution. JVPub contains robust support for exporting VantagePoint charts into this format for both printing and incorporation into larger reports.
Wireless Bitmap (WBMP) WBMP is the standard for graphics display on wireless devices, such as cell phones. JVPub provides a simple tool for exporting VantagePoint charts into this prevalent and important format.
JIMI-Compatible JVPub is compatible with the freely available JINI library that provides support for other commonly employed formats such as BMP, JPEG and PNG. JIMI is licensed separately from Sun Microsystems.
Headless Server Support Under Unix (or Linux) the AWT graphics engine depends upon an executing X Windows server to render graphics. This has complicated the deployment of server-side chart rendering for those wishing to deploy on their preferred platform. JVPub includes a 100% Java replacement for the AWT Graphics object, eliminating dependence upon the X Windows server. With JVPub it is now possible to generate GIF, WMF, PDF, and WBMP files on a "headless" UNIX server.
